January Open House and Awards Presentations

On January the 10th of this year the officers of the Winterville Police Department hosted an open house for the citizens of Winterville at their newly remodeled police facility located behind City Hall on Church Street. All of the full time officers and many of the part-time and reserve officers were present to welcome visitors and demonstrate the agency's most up to date equipment. They answered many questions and provided information regarding crime prevention, personal safety, legal issues and the reduction in the city's crime rate and crime trends over the past year.

Prior to the Open house WPD officers assisted local runners with a 10 K run through the neighborhoods of the city. Near the end of the open house an awards ceremony was held. Chief Mike Vizzini recognized the efforts of several Reserve Officers including Chaplain (Col) Ray Fairman our agency's police chaplain, Captain Art Krinsky, a retired FBI Special Agent and our resident expert on missing children, and Sgt Hal McKinnon, our communications specialist. Former WPD Chief Eric Pozen, now a Captain with the Clarke County Sheriff's Office, was recognized for his continued support of the Winterville Police Departments work in our community while Sergeant Scott Simpson our full-time Sergeant was recognized as the Winterville Police Department Officer Of the Year. Chief Vizzini also recognized one of our local citizens for their heightened awareness, concern and community spirited actions which helped to prevent a serious crime and eliminate a dangerous situation over the holiday season.

The event culminated with comments by Chief Vizzini and Mayor Jim Mercer who reflected on the quality of the officers and their dedication to the community. They both expressed the support that exists within the community for the police department and its officers.
