Winterville Chaplain Gets Around

Chaplain Ray Fairman has been keeping very busy of late and does not plan to be slowing down any time soon. Since returning from Northern Illinois University where he assisted with the recovery process following the tragedy that occurred there, he has been tasked with speaking at two local churches and the Georgia Club. He has also completed his LIDAR Certification Course and the required field training along with several other WPD officers.

Ray was asked to travel to Kentucky this summer and speak on leadership and its role in living a productive and beneficial life to the attendees of a law enforcement officers conference in Ft Mitchel and then to teach on ethics and character education curriculum development at an educators and child advocates conference in Lexington.

Most recently Chaplain Fairman attended the National Association of School Resource Officers Conference in Phoenix AZ where he conducted the Sunday Communion Service and assisted Chaplain Archie Hodge with the Wednesday worship services and provided professional law enforcement advice, spiritual counseling and leadership and ethics information to more than 1200 officers.

Chaplain Fairman is a staff team member of the Christian Law Enforcement Summits, a group of law enforcement officers and police chaplains concerned with and dedicated to the support and encouragement of peace officers and their families all across the country. This group of dedicated individuals conducts family retreats and support services for both single and married law enforcement professionals in Glorieta NM in April of each year followed by a second retreat in Asheville NC conducted in October. These retreats started in NC in 2002 and in NM in 2007. Ray’s wife also participates in these efforts as the Nursery and Pre-school coordinator. The staff of these retreats includes Chaplain (Col) Jack Poe of the Oklahoma City PD and Chaplain Tim Eldred of the Rutherford County TN Sheriff’s office who are actually the responsible parties who began the current law enforcement only retreats. Many other volunteers (yes the staff is all volunteer and pays all their own expenses) from AL, TX, NM, AZ, CA, FL, NC, OK and many other states who are either law enforcement personnel or Police Chaplains all come together to provide whatever services they can in support of those who stand between the good citizens of our country and the evil that confronts them. The staff is working hard to see that all who need this respite in their lives can attend by arranging a small amount of scholarship money to pay or help pay the costs for a family to attend. Ray returned from the NM conference in May and is working hard on the October conference this summer. For more information go to Law Enforcement Retreats or contact Ray through our department.

Ray will also be heading for a Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (POST) Advanced Chaplains Course put on by the Georgia Association of Law Enforcement Chaplains (GALEC) in late August where he will be studying additional course material from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). Ray is our agencies representative on the committee planning the Winterville Veterans Day Ceremonies and coordinates the city’s participation in the Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Campaign each Christmas.
Ray tries to be available for whatever our agency needs him to do and some how he also finds time for many others outside the law enforcement community as well. He recently donated nearly 30 audio books to the Winterville Library and he also spends about 20 hours a month assisting the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.

Ray does all he does as a volunteer because of the 39 years career he has had in law enforcement and the sense of obligation and commitment he gained from his 42+ years of service in the US Marines.

Come back often to see what the members of the WPD are doing.
