Winterville Hosts Speed Detection Device Operator Certification Course

On March 13th Chief Mike Vizzini welcomed more than 23 law enforcement officers from around the state to a day long LIDAR operators course. That all day training session was held at our own Winterville Train Depot classroom. WPD part time Officer Griffin Attabery, a GA POST instructor and also a Sergeant with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit, taught the class of new speed detection device operator candidates.

Attendees from Winterville PD included Chief Vizzini, Reserve Capt. Wayne Gabriel, Part time Officer Al Figueroa, part time Officer Nick Jenkins and Chaplain Ray Fairman.

Officers and deputies also came from Madison PD, The Morgan County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson PD, The Clarke County Sheriff's Office, Cleveland PD, Baldwin PD, DNR and Walton County Sheriff's Office as well as Macon PD. Attendance by so many agencies was indicative of the respect the Winterville Police Department has earned in the law enforcement community under the guidance of Chief Mike Vizzini

These students spent time learning about the scientific principles of Light Detection And Ranging or LIDAR as it is more often called. They also spent time learning the proper procedures for resting, setting up and operating various laser speed measuring devices. Also covered were general speed offenses, the legal and operational principles for using the devices and employment considerations. The course included a practical element when the entire class moved to the outside environment and took turns practicing with several specific LIDAR devices. Having successfully completed a written examination, every officer is required to return to their own department for an additional 16 hours of supervised operational training in the field (This training must be completed within a three week period) while being monitored by a certified LIDAR operator or instructor before becoming certified to operate the devices on their own.

Our police department boasts quite a few GA POST instructors among its officers and places a high value on the training and experience of its officers and reserves.
