Training Is A Continuous Process

The last few months have been busy around the department. The new home for our police department is nearing completion and our officers have been "hitting the books' while they prepare to move across the street and in to the new facility.

To see what our officers have been studying during the last few months just click on "read More" to the left.

Training is taken very seriously around the WPD where professional and educational improvement are constant companions of every officer from the Chief on down to each and every reserve officer as well as our Chaplain. During the past few months Chief Vizzini and various other officers from the WPD have completed training on such subjects as Standardized Field Sobriety Tests Update, Schools as soft targets for terrorism, Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Identifying persons under the influence of drugs, Law Enforcement terrorism concerns and Consensual investigative stops. Chief Vizzini received some of his advanced explosives training from some Israeli experts when he attended a course on explosive devices.

Meanwhile, Col.Ray Fairman has been on the road representing WPD at law enforcement events requiring the services of a Chaplain. He held the Sunday Morning Services and a Prayer Breakfast for the Illinois Sheriff's Training Conference in August as well as conducting a Sunday Morning Communion Service and a Wednesday Night Praise and Worship Service for the National School Resource Officers Association Training Conference at Disney World In July. He has also attended several Critical Incident Stress Management courses conducted by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation and has been accepted for membership in that same association.

Chaplain Fairman has just returned from Black Mountain NC where he served on the staff of the Eastern Cristian Law Enforcement Summit at Ridgecrest Conference Center. Over 140 Officers and their wives, as well as 23 children of officers, attended a conference where topics such as Law Enforcement Suicide, Law Enforcement Marriage and Divorce, Officer Involved Shootings, Career Motivation, Financial Planning for Law Enforcement Families, Stress Management and Law Enforcement Bible Studies were discussed. Chaplain Fairman, who is a volunteer sworn and ordained chaplain for our department, was one of several chaplains who were available to meet with officers from 15 states who attended and who desired to discuss life and career issues in a safe environment. Chaplain Tim Eldred of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office and Chaplain Jack Poe and His wife Phyllis Poe, both chaplains for the Oklahoma City Police Department were a couple of other Chaplains who organized and coordinated the event along with Lt Debbie Yokley from the Rowan County NC Sheriff's Office and Officer Denny Crowder of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD and a staff of about 22 Officers and chaplains. The "CLE Summit" is held in October in NC and in April in Glorieta NM near Santa Fe every year. It is put on by officers for officers and requires an officer be an attendee before he or she can participate as a speaker or staff member. For more information on having an officer or law enforcement couple you know attend, or sponsoring an officer or law enforcement family's attendance or to have our chaplain speak to your church or civic group about this event contact Chaplain Ray Fairman by contacting our office or City Hall.

Activities involving our department coming up in the near future are the Fall Festival in the Park from 9:00 AM until about 3:00 PM on October 20th and the Veterans celebration in November as well as the annual Christmas in the Park in December. We look forward to meeting each of you at any of these events and discussing any concerns you may have, or just sharing some coffee and some good conversation.
